Rumah Eko is TIC’s community-based hub for promoting sustainable tourism and waste management at Pulau Besar, Mersing, Johor. The initiative focuses on practical waste reduction, segregation, recycling, and environmental education, while encouraging local business operators to collaborate with TIC to improve their operations sustainably.

TIC together with The Habitat Foundation, co-chaired in supporting Sustainable Tourism Malaysia to promote the good cause. Here in Pulau Besar, Mersing we come up with Rumah Eko’s Sustainable Tourism Package that utilise local services, helping strengthen island livelihoods while ensuring tourism growth remains environmentally responsible and community-led.

INSTO Support

TIC supports the International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO) initiative in Mersing by contributing marine environment and waste management data to Majlis Daerah Mersing, the appointed INSTO steward for the district. Through field monitoring, community engagement, and on-the-ground conservation work, TIC helps strengthen local understanding of tourism impacts and supports evidence-based planning for sustainable destination management.

Visitor Usage Management

The Visitor Usage Management (VUM) initiative for Johor Marine Park focuses on identifying the desired outcomes of tourism through a shared visioning process with island communities and boat operators. It explores what an ideal and sustainable tourism situation looks like for local stakeholders, ensuring that tourism activities and business aspirations align with a broader sustainability framework while supporting long-term conservation goals.
