POSITION: Marine Conservation Officer
Location: Tengah Island, Mersing, Johor, Malaysia
Employment Type: Full-time
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Marine Conservation Officer to support our field operations, scientific monitoring, and conservation activities on Tengah Island.
The successful candidate will assist in marine habitat and species monitoring, sea turtle conservation, data collection and analysis, and community engagement programs.
This is a hands-on role suited for someone passionate about marine conservation and comfortable working in a remote island environment.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct regular marine habitat surveys (coral reefs, seagrass, mangroves, fish populations).
Support sea turtle conservation programs including nest monitoring, hatchery operations, and community involvement.
Ensure accurate data collection, data entry, and preliminary analysis for reporting.
Provide support in training interns, volunteers, and community members in conservation activities.
Maintain diving and field equipment in good working condition.
Assist in grant reporting, donor communications, and project documentation.
Support education and outreach activities, including workshops and visitor engagement.
Uphold TIC’s safety, sustainability, and conservation standards at all times.
Requirements
Essential:
Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, Environmental Science, or related field (or equivalent experience).
At least 1–2 years of field experience in marine conservation or ecological research.
Diving certification (minimum Advanced Open Water) with strong underwater survey experience.
Ability to collect, record, and manage ecological data accurately.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
Physically fit and adaptable to living/working in a remote island setting.
Desirable:
Experience in sea turtle conservation.
Familiarity with reef survey methods (e.g., Reef Check, video transects, photo quadrats).
Knowledge of data analysis tools (Excel, R, or GIS software).
Boat handling experience.
Experience working with local communities and/or volunteers.
