Tengah Island Conservation (TIC) is pleased to announce a vacancy of Executive Director with our team to work with conservation and local communities in Mersing and the Johor Islands.

This position is open to Malaysian citizens and permanent residents.

The Executive Director will be hired on a remote/hybrid basis, though the position will entail frequent travel to Mersing and other Johor Islands. The candidate should be willing to work on a small island with limited resources. This position is to start in June 2024 and will report to the TIC Committee/Board.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the strategic direction and implementation of TIC's mission and goals in collaboration with the Committee (Board).

  • Oversee all aspects of financial management, including budgeting, resource allocation, and financial strategy to ensure TIC's financial health and sustainability.

  • Spearhead fundraising efforts and develop relationships with donors, partners, and stakeholders to secure funding for conservation projects.

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for TIC, enhancing the organisation's visibility and impact through engagement in local, national, and international forums.

  • Direct the planning, execution, and evaluation of conservation programs and research projects, promoting innovation and scientific excellence.

  • Lead and develop a high-performing team, fostering a culture of excellence, continuous learning, and dedication to conservation goals.

  • Actively participate in and support fieldwork activities, demonstrating a hands-on approach to conservation efforts and leading by example in both marine and terrestrial research and sustainability initiatives.

  • Ensure the organisation's compliance with legal and ethical standards, developing policies and procedures that promote effective operation and safety.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with government agencies, conservation partners, the local community, and other key stakeholders.

    Qualifications:

  • Proven leadership and management experience in a conservation, nonprofit, or related field.

  • Degree in conservation, biological sciences, or related field.

  • Strong strategic thinking, planning, and execution skills.

  • Demonstrated success in fundraising and stakeholder engagement.

  • Demonstrated experience in project management, grant-writing and management of grant-funding.

  • Hands-on practical experience and knowledge of conservation and research techniques with sea turtles, coral reefs, and scuba diving.

  • Minimum of PADI Rescue Diver or equivalent (preferred).

  • Fluent in written and spoken Bahasa Melayu and English.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to represent TIC effectively to a wide range of audiences.

  • Commitment to conservation and environmental sustainability.

  • Experience in financial management and budget oversight.

  • Ability to lead, motivate, and develop a diverse team towards achieving common goals.

  • Friendly, outgoing, enthusiastic, and passionate about nature and conservation

  • Willing to spend some time working on a small, isolated island with limited resources.
